Inspired by the Atlas clock first mounted in the 19th century, Tiffany’s iconic Atlas jewelry collection features Roman numeral motifs in meticulously crafted rings, necklaces, bracelets, and watches.

The key feature of the Atlas Collection is its Roman numeral motif, a testament to the timeless elegance within Tiffany Co.’s jewelry. Whether it’s the bold Atlas watch or the delicate Atlas ring, each item showcases the brand’s dedication to craftsmanship and style.

The use of Roman numerals in the Atlas Collection is more than an aesthetic choice: the numerals represent the ephemeral nature of time. The bold lines of the numerals are a reminder that while trends may come and go, elegance is timeless. The collection includes a wide range of pieces—from rings, bracelets, necklaces, and earrings—in a variety of metals, including 18k gold, sterling silver, and platinum. Some pieces even feature diamonds, adding a touch of brilliance to the already striking design.

What does Atlas mean? Why does Tiffany Co. like it so much?

The Atlas collection is named after the mythological Greek Titan Atlas. In Greek mythology, Zeus punished Atlas for his role in the war against the Olympians by condemning him to hold up the sky for eternity. The Titan Atlas is depicted in a wooden statue holding a clock, installed in 1853, above the main doors of the Tiffany Co. Fifth Avenue flagship store at 550 Broadway, Union Square, and 37th Street. The Roman numerals on the clock face outside of the Tiffany flagship served as the inspiration for the bold architectural lines that define the Atlas Collection.

Tiffany Co. Atlas Watch Styles

In 1983, prior to the launch of the jewelry collection, Tiffany introduced the Atlas watch, designed by John Loring, a Tiffany design director. The Swiss timepiece features brightly polished Roman numeral markers. The Atlas watch comes in both women’s and men’s styles in a variety of sizes (24mm, 29mm, 31mm, 42mm, 49mm, etc.). If you’re a big Tiffany lover, look for an Atlas watch that features a Tiffany Blue azure dial set.

In 1995, Tiffany introduced the full range of Atlas jewelry and accessories. The signature Roman numerals provide immediate recognition to the coveted collection. The signature grooves and numerals make these pieces stand out. There’s an Atlas piece in each category: rings, bracelets, necklaces, and earrings.

Tiffany Co. Atlas X Jewelry

In 2020, Tiffany began phasing out the original Atlas designs and introduced a bold new lineup, Atlas X, revolutionizing the Roman numeral motif. The jewelry, eyewear, and watches are defined by strong lines, open notches, and striking pavé diamonds. The numerals are slightly updated in an angular, geometric style with a bolder, more modern aesthetic.

There are three different motifs within the Atlas X collection: Closed, X and Open. The Closed and Open Atlas styles feature sharper knife-edge profiles on the Roman numbers to create sharp reflections and strong silhouettes. The X styles feature crisscrossing elements that reinforce the collection ethos in a modern way on earrings, pendants and more.

In addition to the updated design, the Atlas X series also introduces new materials and finishes. The pieces are available in a range of metals, including yellow gold, rose gold, and white gold. This updated design reflects a more contemporary aesthetic while staying true to the timeless elegance of the original collection.
