How to Spot a Fake Louis Vuitton Speedy

The Body

Not sure where to start? Let’s begin with the obvious: the construction. Made of coated canvas (not leather), your Speedy should feel durable and look slightly grainy. As for the print, it should feature the LV monogram and flowers, symmetrically laid and evenly spaced. While the monogram pattern may be interrupted by the cut of the canvas, the seams will remain straight and perfectly precise.

The Handles

Let’s get a handle on the handles. Unlike the body of the bag, which is constructed of coated canvas, the handles and trim on a Louis Vuitton Speedy are made of Vachetta leather. The handles on a brand-new Speedy will be a pale, off-white color to start, developing a honey-colored patina over time. Fake Speedy bags, on the other hand, will use a material on the handle that stays pale or turns reddish orange over time.

The Stitching

Start with the thread. Louis Vuitton uses an iconic mustard-yellow thread made of beeswax-coated linen. If the thread is overly glossy, low-quality, or a different color, such as bright orange, it’s a red flag. Stitching on an authentic Louis Vuitton Speedy will always be symmetrical and precise and never uneven, sloppy, or loose.

The Leaf Tab

Also crafted from Vachetta leather, the Louis Vuitton leaf tab on a Speedy holds two key details: the trademark heat stamp and the size.  

The heat stamp reveals the official Louis Vuitton trademark and the country of origin.

Flip it over for your second clue. The number blindly embossed into the leather on the underside of the leaf tab is the size. In this instance, the bag is a size 30.

The Hardware

When authenticating a Louis Vuitton Speedy, the hardware holds a few hints. Since 1991, Louis has used a signature line of golden brass hardware. Before that, hardware varied depending on where the bag was made.

Let’s begin with the Padlock, a key feature on Louis Vuitton Speedy bags.

Padlock

Made from solid brass, the padlock will feature LV on the front and one of these three stamps on the back: 

® LOUIS VUITTON / PARIS / MADE IN FRANCE

® LOUIS VUITTON / PARIS

® LOUIS VUITTON / MADE IN FRANCE

The font itself will hold even more hints for you. Look to the “L,” the “O,” and the “T” in Louis Vuitton for answers. The L will have a little tail, the O will be a perfect circle, and the two Ts will almost touch. 

You can also look at size. An authentic LV padlock will always measure 0.8 inches wide by 1.6 inches tall.

Zipper

The next piece of hardware you will need to examine is the zipper. Speedy bags manufactured post 1991 will feature zippers made with Louis’ gold brass hardware, complete with “Louis Vuitton” on the pull. If your Speedy is older, the zipper may be Swiss-Made or ECLAIR, among others. The finish on an authentic Speedy zipper should be shiny and smooth, clear enough to see your reflection without ripples.

You can even look at the zipper slider for more clues. A real Speedy will feature a raised line down the center of the slider, whereas a counterfeit zipper slider will lie completely flat. Functionality also plays a part. An authentic zipper should glide without snags.

Rivets

Another piece of hardware you can inspect is the rivets. Round and branded, an authentic Speedy will have LOUIS VUITTON embossed into the rivet. The lettering should be crisp, sharp, and deep. 

Haute Tip: Looks to the “O” in Louis Vuitton. It should be round and wider than the “L,” unlike a fake, which will often feature an oval-shaped “O.”
